Moshi: PCMC Commissioner Orders FIR Against Contractor Company, Announces Rs 10 Lakh Aid for Victims’ Families

Pimpri Chinchwad, 12th July 2026: Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Commissioner Dr Vijay Suryawanshi has directed officials to complete the preliminary inquiry into the Moshi garbage dump tragedy at the earliest and register a criminal case against the contractor company associated with the project.

The directions were issued during a high-level review meeting held on Sunday to assess the circumstances surrounding the July 8 disaster at the Moshi garbage depot.

The meeting was attended by Additional Commissioners Kuldeep Jangam, Tripti Sandbhor and Vikrant Bagade, Joint Commissioner Manoj Lonkar, and senior officials from various civic departments.

Notices to Environment Department and Contractor

Dr Suryawanshi also instructed officials to issue notices to the PCMC Environment Department and the project contractor, Antony Lara Renewable, seeking explanations over the incident.

He ordered that the investigation into the accident be completed on priority and that legal action be initiated against the company based on the findings of the preliminary inquiry.

Nine Killed in July 8 Disaster

The accident occurred at around 1.30 pm on July 8, when a massive mound of garbage collapsed onto the administrative building of the Waste-to-Energy project at the Moshi garbage depot.

A total of 23 people were affected by the incident, including 22 inside the building and one person trapped beneath the garbage pile outside.

Immediately after the collapse, five people managed to escape on their own. Rescue teams comprising the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), PCMC, PMRDA Fire Brigade, police and other agencies launched a massive operation to rescue those trapped.

The rescue teams successfully pulled nine people out alive, while nine workers lost their lives in the disaster. The multi-agency rescue operation concluded after more than 83 hours with the recovery of the last missing victim.

₹10 Lakh Compensation for Each Victim’s Family

The PCMC Commissioner directed officials to immediately process financial assistance of ₹10 lakh for the families of each of the nine deceased victims.

  • Sunil Korke (40), Alandi
  • Sunny Mane (39), Gandharvanagari, Moshi
  • Mahesh Kumbhar (33), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
  • Nagesh Gaikwad (26), Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Moshi
  • Ranjeet Patil (22), Moshi
  • Rahul Gaikwad (23), Moshi
  • Vaman Kasbe (50), Moshi

Probe to Determine Accountability

Dr Suryawanshi has ordered a detailed investigation into the tragedy to determine responsibility for the incident. The civic administration is expected to examine whether there were lapses in safety protocols, project management or monitoring that contributed to the collapse.

The move to initiate criminal proceedings against the contractor company marks the first major legal action by the civic body following one of the deadliest industrial disasters linked to the Moshi garbage depot.
