Pune, 16th July 2026: Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale has directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to immediately implement the recent Bombay High Court ruling that clarified municipal corporations have the authority to make corrections in birth and death certificates.

Issuing the directive during a Standing Committee meeting on Thursday, Bhimale said the civic administration should ensure that all pending applications are processed without further delay.

“The Bombay High Court’s decision is in the interest of citizens. If there are any software-related or other technical issues, they should be resolved immediately so that the correction process can resume without interruption,” Bhimale said.

For nearly a month, the PMC had suspended corrections in birth and death certificates, including changes related to names, spelling errors, date of birth, parents’ names, gender, and other details. Following the High Court’s ruling, these powers have now been restored to the municipal corporation.

According to civic officials, around 70 to 100 correction applications remain pending every day. The delay in rectifying minor errors in certificates has caused significant inconvenience to citizens seeking admissions to schools and colleges, passport services, Aadhaar updates, voter identity cards, banking transactions, inheritance claims, and other government-related procedures.

The disruption was also attributed to the migration of nearly 2.4 million birth and death records created before 2019, along with technical issues in the software system used for maintaining the records.

Bhimale instructed the administration to implement the High Court’s order in letter and spirit and ensure that all pending applications are disposed of within a defined timeframe to provide timely relief to citizens.
