Pune, 18th July 2026: A man was arrested by the Shivajinagar Police for allegedly posing as the nephew of a Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) deputy commissioner and cheating a citizen of ₹6 lakh on the pretext of getting pending property tax matters resolved.

The accused, identified as Vijendra Pawar, was detained by PMC security personnel at the civic headquarters on Thursday and later handed over to the police. A case has been registered against him based on a complaint filed by Assistant Security Officer Santosh Naik.

According to the police, Vijendra Pawar falsely claimed to be the nephew of PMC Deputy Commissioner (Property Tax) Ravi Pawar and assured a citizen, Dishant Tate, that he could reduce his pending property tax dues. Believing the claim, Tate allegedly paid him ₹6 lakh.

When the promised work was not completed, Tate approached the Property Tax Department for clarification. During the inquiry, officials confirmed that Vijendra Pawar had no relation to Deputy Commissioner Ravi Pawar. Tate subsequently lodged a complaint with the civic administration.

PMC security personnel identified Vijendra Pawar when he visited the municipal headquarters on Thursday. They detained him and alerted the Shivajinagar Police, who took him into custody.

During the investigation, police found that the accused is the son of a former district collector.

The case has also drawn attention because Vijendra Pawar’s name surfaced recently in another controversy. A few days ago, suspended PMC Superintending Engineer Asit Jadhav had referred to Pawar as his “well-wisher” in a message sent to Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, seeking the cancellation of his transfer. The message allegedly also referred to financial transactions. Following the incident, the Municipal Commissioner suspended Jadhav.

Police are continuing their investigation into the cheating case.
