Pune Ghat Sections Under Orange Alert as IMD Forecasts Heavy Rain
Pune, 28th July 2026: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the ghat sections of Pune district for July 28, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall over the next five days as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to keep monsoon activity active across Maharashtra.
Intermittent rain lashed Pune city throughout Monday, bringing down daytime temperatures and creating cooler weather conditions. Persistent showers disrupted the daily commute of office-goers and students, while the administration urged residents living along riverbanks to remain vigilant as water levels in rivers continue to rise.
According to the IMD, heavy rainfall over the Western Ghats is likely to continue in the coming days, potentially increasing inflows into major reservoirs across the district. Several rivers are already flowing at high levels following continuous rainfall in their catchment areas.
Lonavala recorded the highest rainfall in the district, receiving 111 mm during the 24-hour period ending Monday morning. Within Pune city, Shivajinagar recorded 11.7 mm, Koregaon Park 11 mm and Hadapsar 2.5 mm.
The rainfall also led to a drop in maximum temperatures. Koregaon Park recorded 27.7°C, followed by Shivajinagar at 27.6°C, while Pashan and Ambegaon both recorded 27.0°C.
The weather department has attributed the current spell to the formation of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to sustain widespread rainfall activity across Maharashtra.
The IMD has forecast cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rain at isolated places in Pune district over the next few days. It has also warned that continued rainfall in the ghat regions could further increase inflows into dams and rivers.
