Pune Mayor Gives Police 15-Day Deadline to Tackle Sinhagad Road Traffic Congestion
Pune, 5th August 2026: Taking a strong stand against the worsening traffic congestion on Sinhagad Road, Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure on Wednesday directed the Traffic Police to conduct a comprehensive traffic survey of the corridor and submit a detailed report within 15 days.
“The Pune Municipal Corporation will extend all necessary support to resolve the traffic congestion on Sinhagad Road. However, the Traffic Police must submit an objective traffic survey report within 15 days. Once the report is received, corrective measures will be implemented without delay,” the Mayor said.
The directive was issued during a review meeting held at the Sinhagad Road Ward Office to address the persistent traffic bottlenecks affecting commuters in the area. The survey will cover the main road, alternative routes, and major intersections from Dhayari, Narhe, Nanded City and Vadgaon to Dandekar Bridge. The Mayor said the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) would implement necessary traffic improvement measures and appoint traffic wardens after receiving the report.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the functioning of the Traffic Police, Nagpure questioned their absence at key intersections during peak hours.
“Traffic police personnel are often missing from busy junctions when congestion is at its worst. Those who are present appear to be more focused on issuing fines than ensuring smooth traffic flow. Who, then, is responsible for the hardships faced by citizens?” she asked.
Corporators present at the meeting also voiced concern over the severe traffic congestion between Umbrya Ganpati Chowk and Dandekar Bridge during morning and evening peak hours. They said students, office-goers, patients and other commuters face significant delays every day.
The corporators attributed the worsening traffic situation to inadequate police deployment, vehicles travelling on the wrong side of the road, illegal parking, and increasing encroachments. They also expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of concrete action despite repeated complaints.
As an immediate measure, the Mayor instructed officials to increase the deployment of traffic police personnel and traffic wardens at major junctions. She also directed the PMC and the Traffic Police to prepare a joint action plan to remove encroachments, curb illegal parking, repair potholes, relocate bus stops obstructing traffic, and address issues related to distribution panels (DPs) and overhead utility cables.
Nagpure also criticised the practice of granting permission for festivals, public events and processions without adequately assessing their impact on traffic congestion and noise pollution.
The meeting decided that an all-party delegation would meet the Police Commissioner to discuss permanent solutions for the traffic issues on Sinhagad Road.
