Pune: Class 9 Student Drowns in Rainwater-Filled Pit in Dighi

Pimpri Chinchwad, 10th August 2026: A 15-year-old schoolboy drowned in a rainwater-filled pit behind a school near Magazine Chowk in Dighi on Saturday morning, leaving his family and local residents in shock.

The deceased has been identified as Ashwet Anil Bhosale, a resident of Sant Gajanan Maharaj Nagar in Dighi. He was originally from Bavchi village in Mangalwedha taluka of Solapur district.

Ashwet was a Class 9 student at Ramchandra Gaikwad Vidyalaya in Dighi. His school had closed earlier than usual on Saturday due to the arrival of the Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi in the area during its return journey following the annual Wari.

After returning home, Ashwet went out around 11 am with four friends to play near a large pit behind Moze School near Magazine Chowk. The pit had filled with rainwater during the ongoing monsoon.

While the children were playing near the water, Ashwet reportedly slipped into the pit and began drowning. Before his friends could rescue him, he disappeared into the water. The frightened children reportedly left the spot and informed others about the incident.

Police reached the spot after being alerted. The school principal was also called to the location, and Ashwet’s family was informed. His body was later taken to YCM Hospital in Pimpri, where a post-mortem examination was conducted.

Ashwet’s father, Anil Bhosale, died on August 23, 2020. Since then, Ashwet had been living with his mother Gauri and elder brother Siddheshwar. His mother works as housekeeping staff at Dr DY Patil Hospital in Sant Tukaram Nagar, while his elder brother is studying in Class 11.

Ashwet’s death has left the family facing severe emotional and financial distress, as Gauri had been supporting the family since her husband’s death.

“Ashwet was my nephew. He was loving, quiet, patient and intelligent. His sudden death by drowning has brought immense grief to our family,” said his uncle, Indrajit Bhosale.
