Pune: Cybercrooks Use Ratan Tata Deepfake to Lure Woman With Stock Market Returns

Pune, 10th August 2026: Cybercriminals allegedly used a deepfake video of late industrialist Ratan Tata to dupe a 38-year-old woman from Katraj-Ambegaon Budruk of Rs 4.09 lakh by luring her with promises of high returns from stock market investments.

The woman was allegedly shown a video featuring Tata promoting an investment scheme and was asked to click a link and download an app. She was subsequently contacted by a person identified as Madhumohan, who allegedly promised her high returns through stock market investments.

Trusting the offer, the woman deposited Rs 4,09,100 through the app. However, when she did not receive any returns and realised she had been duped, she approached the police.

The Bharati Vidyapeeth police have registered a case against the cybercriminals and launched a technical investigation.

Police have cautioned citizens against trusting investment advertisements or videos featuring celebrities, industrialists or public figures without verifying their authenticity. They have also advised people not to click on unknown links or download suspicious applications for making financial transactions.

In case of a cyber fraud, victims have been advised to immediately inform their bank and contact the national cybercrime helpline on 1930.
