Pune Railway Station Holding Area Work Gains Pace, 15 Foundations Cast

Pune, 12th August 2026: Work on the permanent passenger holding area at Pune Railway Station is progressing, with foundation excavation completed for 15 footings and foundation casting completed for all 15. Pedestal steel binding is currently underway, while debris has also been removed from the project area.

Site barricading has been installed at vulnerable locations to prevent unauthorised entry into the construction area during the ongoing work.

The permanent holding area is being developed to regulate passenger movement during periods of rush at Pune Railway Station. The proposed facility will cover approximately 5,800 square metres and will be divided into three zones Pre-Ticketing, Ticketing and Post-Ticketing allowing passengers to move through designated areas before proceeding towards the platforms.

“The holding area is being planned with the passenger movement sequence in mind. The separate Pre-Ticketing, Ticketing and Post-Ticketing zones will provide a defined movement arrangement for passengers, particularly during periods of heavy rush. The facility will also include seating, ticketing arrangements, passenger information systems and other basic amenities within the holding area,” said Hemant Kumar Behera, Divisional Commercial Manager and PRO, Pune Division.

The proposed facility will include passenger seating, a Ticket Booking Office, Automatic Ticket Vending Machines, train display and indicator boards, and a public announcement system for providing train-related information. Separate toilet facilities for men, women and Divyangjan passengers, along with drinking water facilities, are also planned.

“Passenger convenience has been considered across different stages of their movement through the station. The planned seating, drinking water, toilets, train information boards and announcement facilities are intended to provide passengers with essential services while they are waiting and moving through the holding area. CCTV coverage and controlled entry and exit arrangements are also part of the proposed facility,” Behera said.

The project also provides for a drop-off and pick-up point and pedestrian plaza spread across approximately 580 square metres in front of the holding area. A separate controlled exit from the Post-Ticketing Zone towards the platforms is proposed to keep incoming and outgoing passenger movement separated.

CCTV surveillance is proposed to cover the holding area, entry and exit points, passenger circulation areas and other important locations. The facility will also have lighting, fans and other electrical installations as part of the planned passenger infrastructure.

The current construction activity includes the completed excavation and casting works for 15 foundations, with pedestal steel binding now underway.
