Pune Crime: Police Sub-Inspector Booked for Allegedly Assaulting Wife and Attempting to Strangle Her
Pune, 21st August 2026: A police sub-inspector posted at Manjari Police Station and his mother have been booked for allegedly subjecting his wife to prolonged mental and physical harassment, assaulting her and attempting to kill her by strangling her.
The accused have been identified as Dhanaji Rangrao Tone and his mother Anusuya Rangrao Tone, residents of Shewalewadi in Hadapsar. Police said Dhanaji Tone went on leave after the case was registered.
According to the complaint filed by the woman at Manjari Police Station, she married Dhanaji Tone on 19th May 2019. She alleged that the harassment began within two months of their marriage.
The woman claims that her husband frequently abused and assaulted her and pressured her to take up employment and earn money.
She further alleged that she was assaulted every three to four days during her pregnancy in 2020. According to the complaint, she was allegedly beaten even when she was seven months pregnant, with her husband allegedly sitting on her and assaulting her.
The complaint also alleges that in May 2025, Dhanaji Tone and his mother subjected the woman to a sex determination test against her wishes.
After allegedly learning that the foetus was a girl, the accused allegedly pressured her to undergo an abortion. The woman has alleged that she was subsequently forced to undergo the procedure.
Following the incident, she approached a Deputy Commissioner of Police and lodged a complaint against her husband. According to the complaint, the DCP subsequently reprimanded Tone.
The woman alleged that her husband was angry over the complaint and later assaulted her and attempted to kill her by pressing her neck and strangling her.
The complaint also refers to a case registered against Dhanaji Tone by the Mumbai Anti-Corruption Bureau on 27th January 2022. The woman alleged that her husband subjected her to further abuse over his anger related to the case.
Police have registered a case against Dhanaji Tone and Anusuya Tone, and further investigation is underway. Police Inspector Irfan Nadaf is conducting the investigation.
The allegations are based on the woman’s complaint and remain subject to investigation and due legal process.
