Pune Pothole Crisis: PMC Engineers Told to Ride Two-Wheelers Daily to Inspect City Roads

Pune, 26th August 2026: With potholes, damaged utility chambers and encroachments on roads and footpaths causing inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) City Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar has directed road department officials to conduct daily field inspections on two-wheelers.
The written directive comes amid complaints over the deteriorating condition of roads following the monsoon. Several roads across the city have developed potholes, while damaged chamber covers and encroachments on roads and footpaths have added to traffic and safety concerns.
The issues have also drawn criticism from citizens and elected representatives, who have been questioning PMC officials and the administration over the condition of roads and footpaths.
Two-hour inspection every day
As per the directive, officials and employees of the PMC road department, from junior engineers to executive engineers, have been asked to conduct daily inspections on two-wheelers instead of four-wheelers.
The instructions apply to road department officials working across five administrative circles and their respective ward offices.
The inspections are to be conducted during the morning session for at least two hours, from 9.45 am to 11.45 am, along with the concerned officials.
Potholes, encroachments and road safety to be checked
During the inspections, officials have been instructed to check potholes on roads and footpaths, deterioration of road surfaces, covers of water supply and sewage lines, encroachments and other civic issues.
They have also been asked to assess traffic safety, road riding quality and the measures required to address problems identified during the inspection.
A daily report on the findings and necessary action is to be submitted to the concerned department head.
Action threatened for non-compliance
The directive makes compliance mandatory and warns that disciplinary action may be taken against officials and employees who fail to carry out the inspections.
