Contempt Petition Filed Against Pune Police Commissioner over Alleged Failure to Curb Noise Pollution
Pune, 29th August 2026: A contempt petition has been filed before the Bombay High Court against Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar, alleging failure to effectively curb noise pollution in the city and comply with the court’s directions on the issue.
The petition was filed on August 27, 2026, by six petitioners, including Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, Pune District CHS and Apartments Federation and Pune District Retail Traders Association. Advocate Satya Mule is representing the petitioners.
The petitioners have alleged that the Pune police have failed to effectively implement directions issued by the Bombay High Court on August 20, 2024, in Public Interest Litigation No. 191 of 2023 concerning control of noise pollution.
They have contended that since the police commissioner is responsible for preventing noise pollution and maintaining law and order, failure to comply with the court’s directions amounts to a violation of the court order.
The petition states that high-volume DJs and loudspeakers are used during various religious festivals, including Ganeshotsav and Eid, as well as political meetings, processions and other events. This, the petitioners said, has resulted in significant noise pollution affecting residents.
Senior citizens, young children, sick persons and people living in residential areas are particularly affected, they said. The petitioners also alleged that although citizens approach police helplines with complaints about noise pollution, the expected action is not taken in several cases.
They have sought strict compliance with rules governing the use of drums, horns, musical instruments, loud amplifiers and other sound-producing equipment.
The petition also points out that the issue is not restricted to DJs during festivals, but includes noise generated by bars, pubs, restaurants and entertainment centres.
The petition has brought the issue of noise pollution in Pune back into focus ahead of the upcoming Ganeshotsav. Attention is now on the stand the Pune police will take on the allegations and the directions the High Court may issue in the matter.
