Pune: PMC Records Over 400 Suspected Dengue Cases in August, Intensifies Anti-Mosquito Drive

Pune, 5th September 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) recorded more than 400 suspected dengue cases and 14 chikungunya cases in August as stagnant water left behind by the monsoon rains created favourable breeding grounds for mosquitoes across the city.

With mosquito breeding emerging as a growing concern, the civic body has intensified anti-larval measures and fogging operations in identified hotspots. PMC health teams have also been conducting containment measures around the residences of patients testing positive for dengue and chikungunya.

Dr Rajesh Dighe, assistant health officer, PMC, said the civic body has recorded 1,231 suspected dengue cases and 47 confirmed cases so far this year. A total of 21 chikungunya cases have also been reported during the period.

“Since the monsoon began, our teams have been deployed on the ground. Whenever a positive patient is reported, the PMC sends a team to conduct containment activities around the patient’s residence to prevent further transmission,” Dighe said.

The civic body’s August figures come amid reports from private hospitals of a steady increase in dengue and chikungunya infections across age groups. Doctors, however, said most patients are currently being managed on an outpatient (OPD) basis.

Physicians warned that patients with underlying conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and cancer face a higher risk of complications from these infections and may require hospitalisation.

Health officials have urged citizens to prevent water stagnation in and around their homes, as even small quantities of stagnant water can become breeding sites for mosquitoes.
