Pune Police Monitor DJ Noise at 1,100 Dahihandi Mandals, Action Initiated Against 106

Pune, 7th September 2026: With DJ noise under close police scrutiny during this year’s Dahihandi celebrations, Pune police have initiated action against 106 mandals and seized four plasma speakers and a sound system for alleged violations of noise pollution norms. Sound-level readings of systems installed by around 1,100 mandals have been recorded, with police now examining the data to identify further violations.

The police have said legal action will be taken against mandals found to have breached the prescribed decibel limits. In one such case, a mandal in Bibvewadi has already been booked for allegedly causing noise pollution.

The action comes amid growing public opposition to loud DJ music and ahead of Ganeshotsav, with the Dahihandi festival being seen as a precursor to the larger celebrations. Senior citizens and residents had raised concerns over excessive noise, while a protest march against DJs was also held in Pune on Sunday.

Ahead of the festival, the police had issued guidelines regulating the use of DJs and sound amplifiers. Mandals were directed to follow the ‘four base, four top’ limit and comply with prescribed noise pollution norms. Some mandals also opted to organise their celebrations without DJs.

While the police said the overall noise levels appeared to be lower than during previous festivals, loud amplifiers were still reported in several areas. The police are continuing to scrutinise the sound-level readings recorded during the celebrations and will initiate further action against mandals found violating the norms.
