Concerns Over Vehicle With Over 55 Challans Worth Rs 1 Lakh Using Device or Technology to Conceal Number Plate on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

Pune/Mumbai, 8th September 2026: Concerns have been raised over a vehicle allegedly using a device or a technology to conceal its registration number while travelling on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. A video showing a Toyota Fortuner allegedly using the technique has been widely circulated on social media.

The video appears to show a black frame being activated over the vehicle’s number plate within seconds, completely concealing the registration number. According to reports accompanying the video, the vehicle has more than 55 pending traffic challans amounting to over Rs 1 lakh, including offences such as dangerous driving, overspeeding and use of illegal number plates.

The incident has raised serious questions over traffic enforcement, with concerns that vehicles able to deliberately conceal their registration numbers could potentially evade identification in cases ranging from hit-and-run incidents and illegal transportation to more serious criminal activities.

Despite the alleged large number of pending challans and repeated traffic violations, questions are being raised over why the vehicle has not been seized or action taken against it by the authorities.

The video has also triggered criticism of traffic enforcement in the state, with citizens questioning how a vehicle with such a significant history of violations can continue to ply on roads while allegedly being equipped with a mechanism to hide its registration number.
