Pune Emerges Top Choice for Engineering Students Across Maharashtra After Four CAP Rounds, Computer Engineering Most Preferred

Pune, 12th September 2026: As many as 1,52,452 students have secured admission to engineering courses across Maharashtra after the completion of four rounds of the Centralised Admission Process (CAP), accounting for 74.99 per cent of the 2,03,293 seats available through the centralised process.

Computer Engineering emerged as the most preferred branch, with 23,230 students securing admission. At the university level, colleges affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) recorded the highest number of admissions, while Pune district topped the district-wise list.

For this year’s engineering admission process, online registrations were conducted between July 2 and July 19, during which 2,45,646 students registered. Across 380 engineering colleges in the state, 2,18,976 seats are available across 111 branches, including management quota seats. Of these, 2,03,293 seats were offered through the CAP.

After four CAP rounds, 1,52,452 students have secured admission across 380 colleges affiliated with 17 universities.

With the CAP rounds completed, institutional and management quota admission rounds are now underway and will continue until September 14. As many as 50,841 seats left vacant after the CAP rounds are available under the institutional quota, while 15,683 seats are available under the management quota.

Computer Engineering recorded the highest number of admissions among the 111 branches, with 23,230 students opting for the course. It was followed by Mechanical Engineering with 16,918 admissions, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering with 15,971, Computer Science and Engineering with 15,787, and Information Technology with 12,494.

Civil Engineering recorded 12,095 admissions, followed by Electrical Engineering with 12,095, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science with 10,192, Computer Science and Engineering (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) with 8,816, and Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning with 5,480 admissions.

SPPU-affiliated engineering colleges recorded the highest number of admissions among universities, with 53,973 students securing seats.

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University, Lonere, followed with 30,909 admissions, while Mumbai University recorded 25,358 admissions. Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University recorded 14,024 admissions, followed by Shivaji University, Kolhapur, with 8,416.

Pune district topped the district-wise admission figures with 41,122 students securing admission to engineering colleges. Nagpur followed with 15,487 admissions, while Nashik recorded 10,570, Kolhapur 9,669 and Mumbai Suburban 9,012.

The admission figures indicate that students from across Maharashtra continue to prefer Pune for engineering education, with the presence of reputed educational institutions, a strong IT industry ecosystem and growing employment opportunities contributing to the city’s appeal.

The figures also underline the continued popularity of Computer Engineering, with the branch recording the highest number of admissions in the state amid the growing influence of technology across sectors.

With 50,841 seats remaining vacant after the CAP rounds, the institutional admission process is currently underway, along with admissions under the management quota.
