Pune: 50-Foot-High Water Tank at BJ Medical College Hostel Partially Collapses, Road Closed

Pune, 12th September 2026: An old water tank at the B.J. Government Medical College boys’ hostel premises, behind Pune District Collector office, was found in a highly dangerous condition after a portion of its upper section partially collapsed on Saturday morning, prompting the Pune Fire Brigade and multiple civic agencies to rush to the spot.
According to the Pune Fire Brigade, the circular tank is approximately 50 feet high and has a capacity of around 2 lakh litres. The tank has deteriorated and is reportedly at risk of further collapse.
The Fire Brigade control room received information about the tank being in a dangerous condition at around 6:43 am. A fire brigade vehicle (MH12NY 4028) was immediately sent to the location.
The seriousness of the situation prompted personnel from the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Disaster Management and Construction departments, police, Public Works Department (PWD), B.J. Government Medical College administration and traffic police to reach the site.
As a precautionary measure, the road near the tank has been barricaded on both sides and traffic has been stopped.
Safety instructions have also been issued to students staying in the boys’ and girls’ hostels as well as local residents in the area.
The Fire Brigade said further action will be taken in coordination with the PWD and B.J. Medical College administration to address the dangerous structure.
