Nine PMC Hospitals to Get Modular OTs, ICUs and Upgraded Maternity Facilities
Pune, 12th September 2026: Pune residents unable to afford expensive treatment at private hospitals may soon have access to advanced medical facilities at civic-run hospitals, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) deciding to undertake a complete overhaul of nine major hospitals and maternity homes across the city.
The upgraded facilities will include modular operation theatres (OTs), intensive care units (ICUs), modern maternity wards and other healthcare infrastructure designed to provide high-end medical services.
The surgical departments will be equipped with infection-resistant flooring, modern OT control panels, specialised filtration systems, electronic operating tables and single-arm surgical pendants. Hospitals will also get HVAC systems to maintain clean and sterile air, modern nurse-call systems, medical gas pipelines and digital fumigation systems.
A dedicated 10-bed ICU will be established at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Bopodi. The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Kamala Nehru Hospital will also be expanded.
The nine facilities selected for the overhaul are Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, Bopodi; Bharat Ratna Late Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, Yerawada; Murlidhar Laigude Dispensary, Dhayari; Kashinath Anaji Dhankawade Maternity Home, Balajinagar; Sonawane Hospital, Bhavani Peth; Jijau Maternity Home, Mitramandal Chowk; Chandumama Nanasaheb Sutar Maternity Home, Kothrud; Sakharam Jayabai Kundalik Kodre Maternity Home, Mundhwa; and Draupadabai Murlidhar Khedekar Maternity Home, Bopodi.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Pavneet Kaur said the civic administration will also initiate the process of permanently filling 38 specialist posts in the health department.
The revamp is aimed at strengthening the PMC’s public healthcare infrastructure and providing residents with better treatment facilities without the high costs associated with private hospitals.
