Pune: Demand for Mutton, Fish and Chicken Rises After Ganeshotsav; Chicken Prices Up Rs 20 Per Kg
Pune, 27th September 2026: Demand for mutton, fish and chicken increased in Pune on Sunday following the conclusion of Ganeshotsav, with non-vegetarian food consumers thronging meat and fish markets across the city.
Traders said demand for fish rose by around 50% compared with the previous week, while chicken prices increased by ₹20 per kg. Mutton prices, however, remained stable.
The increase in demand follows a period during which many consumers traditionally avoided non-vegetarian food during Adhik Maas, Shravan and Ganeshotsav.
Mutton demand picks up
Prabhakar Kamble, president of the Pune City Mutton Shopkeepers Association, said demand for mutton, fish and chicken had increased after Ganeshotsav.
“Demand for non-vegetarian food was affected during Adhik Maas, Shravan and Ganeshotsav. After the conclusion of Ganeshotsav, customers returned to the markets on Sunday,” Kamble said.
He added that mutton prices remained stable at around ₹840 per kg.
Fish demand rises by 50%
Fish traders also reported a significant increase in demand on Sunday.
“Demand for fish has increased after Ganeshotsav. Since it was Sunday, there was a rush at the fish market. Compared with last week, demand has increased by around one-and-a-half times,” said Thakur Pardeshi, a trader at the Ganesh Peth fish market.
Pardeshi said pomfret and rawas were selling at higher rates, while prices of other varieties remained stable.
The Ganesh Peth fish market received around 15-20 tonnes of deep-sea fish, 400-500 kg of river fish and 200-300 kg of creek fish on Sunday. Another 10-15 tonnes of rohu, katla and seelan arrived from Andhra Pradesh, he said.
Chicken prices rise by ₹20 per kg
Chicken prices also increased following the rise in demand.
“Chicken prices have increased by ₹20 per kg compared with last week. Demand increased significantly as Sunday followed the conclusion of Ganeshotsav,” said Rupesh Pardeshi, director of the Pune City Broiler Association.
English egg prices remained stable, while country eggs became costlier by ₹40 per 100 eggs, he said.
Current prices in Pune
Pomfret is selling at ₹800 to ₹2,000 per kg, while halwa is priced at ₹600 to ₹700 per kg. Surmai is available for ₹400 to ₹700 per kg, while prawns are priced between ₹140 and ₹750 per kg, depending on the variety and size.
Mutton is selling at around ₹840 per kg, while chicken is priced at ₹220 per kg. Country eggs are available at ₹156 per dozen, compared with ₹78 per dozen for English eggs.
