Pune: PMC Plans Annual Bridge Checks After Audit Flags 98 Structures For Repairs, Completes Repairs On 21
Pune, 28th September 2026: Repair of old bridges in the city will no longer remain a one-time exercise, with the civic administration planning to inspect every bridge annually as part of its regular maintenance programme. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has so far completed repairs of 21 bridges and flyovers, while work on the remaining bridges and culverts will be taken up in phases depending on the availability of funds.
A structural audit conducted by expert consultants last year found that 98 bridges and flyovers required repairs. Of these, the responsibility for five bridges lies with the respective contractors under the defect liability period. The PMC’s special projects department subsequently prioritised repair work for the remaining 93 bridges.
Giving the highest priority to bridges categorised under ‘A’ class, the PMC planned repairs in three phases. Of the 11 bridges identified in the first phase, work on 10 has been completed, while 11 of the 17 bridges in the second phase have been repaired.
The repair work on the 21 bridges included replacement of bearings and expansion joints, along with structural strengthening.
The first phase of the work was estimated to cost Rs 10 crore, while the second phase is pegged at Rs 17 crore. The PMC has sanctioned Rs 8 crore in the budget for the third phase, under which repairs of around 14-15 bridges are expected to be taken up.
“Regular inspections will help us assess the condition of bridges and take timely measures wherever required,” said Dinkar Gojare, head of the PMC’s special projects department.
