Pune, 1st October 2026: A road project that has remained stuck in discussions for nearly four decades is finally set to move to the execution stage. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will invite tenders for the first two phases of the High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) in the first week of November, with work expected to begin soon after, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said.

The first two phases will cover Sinhagad Road and Viman Nagar, with each phase estimated to cost around ₹2,000 crore. The PMC plans to raise loans to finance the project and is in the process of appointing a consultant to assist with the borrowing exercise.

The HCMTR is being planned as an additional high-capacity road network to help ease Pune’s growing traffic congestion. The project’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) is expected to be completed by December.

Land acquisition to cost ₹2,634 crore
The project will require the acquisition of nearly 4.98 lakh square metres of land, for which the PMC has estimated compensation of around ₹2,634 crore.

The proposed route will pass through areas including Bopodi, Aundh, Bhamburda, Erandwane, Kothrud, Hingne, Parvati, Wanowrie, Hadapsar, Mundhwa, Vadgaon Sheri, Lohegaon, Yerawada and Dhanori.

The project will also require land owned by various government departments. According to officials, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured the PMC that the required government land will be made available without compensation.

The PMC will submit a consolidated proposal detailing the government land required for the project. The civic body expects the HCMTR to create an additional high-capacity road network and help distribute traffic more evenly across the city.
