Pune, 1st October 2026: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has imposed a penalty of ₹75 lakh on a contractor for delays in road construction work on three roads under the Chakan decongestion project. The action comes amid growing complaints from commuters and local residents over persistent traffic congestion in the industrial hub.

The contractor, M/s Krishnai Infra Pvt. Ltd., has been fined ₹25 lakh for each of the three roads due to the slow pace of work, despite repeated instructions from the administration to speed up construction.

Under the Chakan decongestion project, work on seven roads is currently underway and is expected to be completed by December. However, progress has been slow due to traffic congestion, the implementation of one-way traffic arrangements, inadequate manpower and other operational challenges.

The delays have added to traffic congestion in Chakan and surrounding areas. Police have also been facing difficulties in planning alternative routes for vehicles, while complaints from residents and commuters have increased.

Following the complaints, PMRDA Commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhary inspected the road works and directed officials to impose penalties on the contractor.

District administration reviews infrastructure projects
Traffic congestion and infrastructure-related problems in Chakan have drawn criticism from local residents and industrialists over the administration’s handling of the situation.

Following these concerns, Maharashtra Industries Minister Uday Samant visited the Chakan area and directed Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi to prepare a time-bound action plan for improving infrastructure and ensure regular reviews of ongoing projects.

Accordingly, PMRDA has stepped up its monitoring of infrastructure works in Chakan and surrounding areas. The administration is also working on road and other infrastructure improvements in Hinjawadi, another major employment hub facing traffic congestion.

Land acquisition delays affect Hinjawadi roads
Plans to ease traffic congestion in Hinjawadi include the development of six roads. However, land acquisition has delayed progress.

For two of these roads, consent has reportedly been obtained from around 70% of the affected residents. Completing the remaining procedures and securing possession of the land could take another five to six months, according to the administration.

Four more Chakan road projects delayed
Apart from the seven roads currently under construction, work on four other proposed roads in Chakan has been held up due to various issues.
The approval proposal for one of the projects is pending with the District Collector’s office. Changes have also been made to the plan for a road connecting Medankarwadi.

The proposed Kharabwadi road is facing technical difficulties, with existing constructions along the route complicating the decision-making process. Meanwhile, land acquisition for the road connecting to Nanekarwadi has not yet been completed.

These issues have delayed progress on the four projects, officials said.
“Road works in Chakan are underway, and inspections are being carried out periodically. Instructions have been issued to the concerned agencies to accelerate the work. The land acquisition process is also underway for some roads,” said PMRDA Commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhary.
