Pune, 2nd October 2026: Pune City Police have dismissed a claim circulating through a social media reel and audio clip that 123 girls were abducted in the city within 22 hours, saying verification has found no concrete information, records or evidence supporting the allegation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Gauhar Hasan, in an officially released statement, said police had taken serious note of the viral content and conducted detailed checks through the relevant police stations, the Crime Branch and other available sources.
“At present, no concrete information, record or evidence has come to the notice of the police establishing that 123 girls were abducted in Pune city in the past 22 hours,” Hasan said.
Police described the claim circulating through the reel and audio clip as “factually incorrect and baseless”. However, they clarified that a detailed inquiry into the matter remains underway.
Police Contact Audio Creator and Housing Society Representatives
As part of the verification, officers contacted the person who recorded the audio and obtained information from them. Police also spoke to office-bearers or management representatives of the housing society concerned, neighbours and other individuals connected with the matter.
The information obtained from these sources was examined to establish the facts behind the viral allegation. According to the statement, the checks did not uncover material substantiating the claim.
The press release did not identify the person who recorded the audio or name the housing society involved.
Inquiry Continues; Fresh Evidence Will Be Examined
DCP Hasan said police would examine any additional information emerging during the ongoing inquiry and act accordingly.
“A detailed inquiry into the matter is still underway. If any new information or evidence is received during the inquiry, appropriate legal action will be taken accordingly, and information will be provided as necessary,” he said.
Police cautioned that such unverified content could create unnecessary fear, confusion and misconceptions among residents. Citizens were urged not to believe or forward false, unverified or misleading information.
Women’s Safety Remains a Priority
Reassuring residents, Hasan reiterated that the safety of women and girls remains Pune Police’s highest priority.
“The safety of women and girls is the highest priority of Pune Police, and all necessary measures for their protection are being undertaken continuously,” he said.
Police appealed to citizens to rely on official and verified Pune Police communication channels rather than sharing information without checking its authenticity.
Residents who become aware of an actual incident, suspicious activity or relevant information should immediately contact the nearest police station or the police, the statement said.
The appeal also urged social media users to act responsibly and avoid falling prey to rumours.
