Pune, 6th October 2026: Athletes from the Army Sports Institute (ASI), Koregaon Park Annexe, Pune, won 12 medals at the Asian Games, accounting for 60% of the 20 medals won by Indian Army athletes across various sporting disciplines.

A total of 25 ASI athletes were part of the Indian contingent at the Asian Games. Their 12-medal haul came in athletics, boxing, archery and wrestling.

The Army has been promoting sporting talent through its Mission Olympics programme, with a focus on identifying promising athletes and preparing them for international competitions. At ASI Pune, athletes receive specialised coaching, sports science support, dedicated infrastructure and structured training.

Athletics accounted for six of the 12 medals won by ASI athletes.

Gulveer Singh won three medals, including silver in the 1,500m and 10,000m events and bronze in the 5,000m. Sawan Barwal won silver in the marathon, ending a 44-year wait for an Indian medal in the event and setting a national record.

Sarvesh Kushare won silver in the high jump,
securing India’s first medal in the event at the Asian Games in 56 years. Dharmveer was part of the Indian men’s 4x400m relay team that won a bronze medal.

In boxing, Sub Ankush won gold, while Sub Narender and Hav Kapil won bronze medals.
In archery, Sub Dhiraj won two silver medals in the team and mixed team events. He also scored 698 out of 720 to set an Asian record.

Sub Deepak Punia won bronze in the 97kg freestyle wrestling event.

The 12-medal performance reflects the sustained efforts of the athletes, coaches and support staff at ASI, while highlighting the institute’s role in developing elite sporting talent for India.

Through its Mission Olympics programme and sports infrastructure, the Indian Army has continued to support athletes competing at the national and international levels.
