Reported by Mubarak Ansari
Pune, 6th October 2026: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has decided to establish a 150-tonne-per-day (TPD) solid waste processing plant at Theur in Haveli taluka, aimed at addressing the waste management problem faced by 14 gram panchayats in eastern Haveli.
The project will be developed on 10 acres of PMRDA-owned gairan land at Theur. The capacity has been planned by taking into account the projected population growth in the area up to 2043.
The decision was discussed at a special review meeting held at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hall at PMRDA headquarters in Akurdi on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by Shirur-Haveli MLA Dnyaneshwar Katke and was chaired by PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhari.
Additional Metropolitan Commissioner K. Manjulakshmi, Chief Engineer (Special Projects) Rinaz Pathan, Executive Engineer Anita Kulkarni, Deputy Engineers Ritesh Mundhe and Arvind Sidral, Zilla Parishad Deputy Chief Executive Officer Bhushan Joshi, Haveli Block Development Officer Shekhar Shelar, along with sarpanches, administrators and extension officers from the participating villages, were present.
14 villages to send waste to centralised facility
According to the plan, participating gram panchayats located within a 20-km radius of the proposed facility will collect waste from their respective areas and transport it to the Theur plant.
The waste will then undergo scientific processing at the facility. The participating gram panchayats will be required to pay a prescribed tipping fee for processing the waste.
PMRDA has also sought formal resolutions from the participating gram panchayats confirming their willingness to join the project.
The 14 gram panchayats covered under the proposed project are Theur, Loni Kalbhor, Kadamwakvasti, Kesanand, Wadebolhai, Uruli Kanchan, Saswad? Wait — Saswad is not in the supplied list.
The villages listed in the proposal are Theur, Loni Kalbhor, Kadamwakvasti, Kesanand, Wadebolhai, Uruli Kanchan, Sashtे, Koregaon Mul, Sortapwadi, Alandi Mhatobachi, Naigaon Prayag Dham, Shindawane, Peth and Kolwadi.
MLA promises support for waste collection vehicles
MLA Dnyaneshwar Katke welcomed PMRDA’s decision to undertake the project and said efforts would be made to provide waste collection vehicles to financially weaker gram panchayats.
He said he would make special efforts to secure funds from the Zilla Parishad and District Planning Committee for providing waste collection vehicles.
Katke also appealed to other gram panchayats located near the proposed project to consider joining the facility.
Second major waste project after Chakan
The Theur project comes after PMRDA initiated the process for a centralised solid waste processing facility for 19 gram panchayats and two municipal councils in the Chakan MIDC area.
With the proposed Theur facility, PMRDA is now planning waste management infrastructure for two major industrial and peri-urban belts in the Pune Metropolitan Region.
The Theur project is expected to provide a long-term waste management framework for eastern Haveli, with its capacity planned in view of projected population growth until 2043.
