200+ Speed Breakers to Go: How Pune Is Preparing 136 Km of Roads for Grand Tour 2027

Pune, 6th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun preparations to upgrade roads along nearly 136 km of the Pune Grand Tour cycling route, with all ongoing excavation work by utility agencies ordered to be completed by October 31.
City Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar has directed agencies involved in excavation for water supply, drainage, Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL), Mahavitaran, Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (I-TRIPLE-C), police CCTV and other utility services to complete their work within the deadline.
Road improvement works along the cycling route will begin after the excavation work is completed. Pawaskar said agencies seeking permission to dig along the route have been instructed to complete their works within the stipulated timeframe. No further excavation for utility services will be permitted on the Pune Grand Tour route after the deadline, he said.
The Pune Grand Tour cycling event is scheduled to be held in January 2027. A meeting chaired by Pawaskar was held at the PMC headquarters to review preparations for the event. Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil, PMC Chief Engineer (Roads) Rajesh Bankar, heads of various civic departments and representatives of concerned agencies attended the meeting.
Officials were instructed to ensure that roads along the cycling route are developed in accordance with international standards. The meeting also reviewed ongoing excavation works being carried out for various utility services.
The works under review include projects by MNGL, MSDCL, Dinesh Engineering, a CCTV allied company, as well as PMC’s water supply, drainage and electrical departments.
Four roadwork packages underway
Road improvement works covering approximately 136 km have been divided into four packages and will be executed in four phases. While some stretches will be newly developed, around 52 km of roads will undergo repairs.
Work on all four packages has already commenced. The scope includes resurfacing, raising or lowering utility chambers to match the road level, repairing existing footpaths, constructing new footpaths wherever required, repairing damaged road dividers and painting.
Wall painting, beautification and landscaping works are also planned along the route.
