Pune: Frequent Pipeline Damage During Katraj-Kondhwa Road Work Leaves Residents Without Water
Pune, 7th October 2026: Frequent damage to water pipelines during the ongoing Katraj-Kondhwa road-widening work has disrupted water supply to several residential pockets, with some areas going without water for up to four days and others receiving it at very low pressure.
Residents of Gokulnagar, Maulinagar, Silver Oak, Jaldhara, Akash Darshan and Utkarsh societies said pipelines are repeatedly being shifted or damaged as roadwork progresses. The problem has persisted for years, leaving some pockets dependent on water supplied only once or twice a week.
The latest disruption occurred after a pipeline developed a leak on Monday night when water supply was being released. Residents said the recurring damage has made the already irregular supply worse.
“New connections should be provided to the newly laid 12-inch pipeline so that the line does not keep getting damaged,” said Arvind More, president of Silver Oak Society.
Rashmi Varude, a resident of Jaldhara Society, said her area had received no water for two days. “The problem has worsened over the past few months. Should working people stay home waiting for the water supply?” she said.
Rekha Misal of Akash Darshan Apartment said water has been reaching the upper floors only once a week for the past year. “We have to collect water from the lower floors, where the pressure is also very low,” she said.
Nitin Khude, executive engineer of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s water supply department, said the latest disruption was caused by a pipeline leak. “Repair work has been taken up. Water supply will be restored immediately after the work is completed,” he said.
Residents said the civic body needs to coordinate pipeline work with the road-widening project to prevent repeated damage and ensure a reliable water supply. They also questioned the lack of a fixed schedule, saying water is sometimes released during working hours, making it difficult for households to store it.
The Katraj-Kondhwa road-widening project has also been under scrutiny over safety concerns, with at least 21 people reportedly killed in accidents on the stretch.
