Pune: PMC Fines Six Contractors for Poor Sweeping Work, Recovers Rs 6.25 Lakh in Fines
Pune, 8th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has imposed financial penalties on six contractors for negligence in sweeping work across the city and claimed that the quality of work has improved by around 50% following the action.
The civic body has so far recovered around Rs 6.25 lakh in penalties from contractors, with a fine of Rs 1,000 now being imposed for each worker found negligent in sweeping duties.
To improve the quality and effectiveness of sweeping operations, the PMC has launched a three-month performance-based sweeping project on a pilot basis. Sweeping work in different areas under various ward offices has been assigned to separate contractors.
PMC officials are conducting spot inspections to check whether contractors are carrying out the work as prescribed. Additional Municipal Commissioner Prajit Nair has also inspected several areas and said surprise inspections would be conducted in the coming days.
Officials said action was initiated after garbage was found at locations where sweeping work had been carried out. Notices were issued to Priyank Enterprises Prime Avenue, Sumit Facilities Ltd, Siddhivinayak Enterprises and Global Waste Management Cell Pvt Ltd, among others.
Under the Bibwewadi ward office, L.V.G. Facilities India Pvt Ltd was fined Rs 2.75 lakh after its work remained below expectations even two months after the project began. A contractor, Lokrajya Self-Employment Services Cooperative Society, operating under the Kothrud-Bavdhan ward office, was fined Rs 20,000.
“Earlier, contractors were mostly issued notices. One company was fined Rs 5,000. We have now started imposing a penalty of Rs 1,000 per worker. This has resulted in around 50% improvement in the work,” said Santosh Varule, deputy commissioner, solid waste management department, PMC.
