Pune, 8th October 2026: Pune-based ophthalmologist Dr Vardhaman Kankariya has been named among the world’s top 50 ophthalmologists in a ranking by US-based organisation Expertscape, according to an announcement.

Dr Kankariya, director of Asian Eye Hospital in Pune, has been recognised for his contributions to cataract and refractive surgery, including procedures to correct vision and reduce dependence on spectacles. The recognition highlights his work in the field since 2010, the hospital said.

Expertscape ranks medical experts based on their research publications and contributions to specific medical fields. The list also includes Prof Dr Namrata Sharma of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and Dr Rohit Shetty of Bengaluru.

Dr Kankariya specialises in procedures including LASIK, robotic-assisted cataract surgery and advanced vision correction. According to the hospital, he has also received national and international awards for his work in ophthalmology.

He is listed in the Limca Book of Records for his LASIK surgery work, the hospital said. He has also treated patients with very high spectacle prescriptions, including cases involving powers of minus 30 dioptres, using advanced surgical procedures.

Dr Kankariya has contributed to the introduction of advanced eye-care technologies in Pune and India, particularly in femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery.

Reacting to the recognition, Dr Kankariya said the honour belonged to the entire team at Asian Eye Hospital, his teachers, patients and the city of Pune. He added that the recognition would encourage the team to continue working towards improved eye care, research, innovation and advanced surgical treatment.

The recognition adds to Pune’s presence in India’s ophthalmology sector, with the city home to institutions offering specialised eye-care services and advanced surgical procedures.
