New Delhi, 16th October 2026: Telecom operators must display the caller’s name alongside their phone number on receivers’ screens from Nov 1, under a Department of Telecommunications (DoT) directive aimed at curbing spam calls.

The Oct 13 order mandates the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service across all service areas for operators providing access services. The facility will initially cover 4G and 5G wireless networks, with its extension to 2G, 3G and landline networks to be considered later.

For incoming domestic calls, the caller’s name will appear as saved in the receiver’s contacts or, if unsaved, as recorded by the telecom operator. Calls from abroad will be labelled “international call”.

The directive follows trials conducted by telecom service providers to introduce CNAP on wireless terrestrial networks.
