Reported by Mubarak Ansari
Pune/Baramati, 18th October 2026: Rana Suryavanshi, head of Rana Shipping Company, was attacked near Baramati airport on Sunday, sustaining an injury to his right hand in an assault involving a sharp weapon. Police are searching for two unidentified suspects, while the reported firing incident remains unconfirmed.
Suryavanshi was initially reported to have been targeted in a firing incident. However, Baramati Sub-Divisional Police Officer Chaitanya Kadam said police had not yet confirmed whether a shot was fired. No empty cartridges had been recovered from the scene during the initial inspection, and further investigation was underway.
According to Kadam, Suryavanshi had visited an area near a railway bridge in the Gujarwadi jurisdiction for personal work. He had reportedly left the government-provided security detail behind on Bhigwan Road and was accompanied by two or three private bodyguards in his vehicle.
While Suryavanshi was talking to friends after getting out of his vehicle, two people arrived on a scooter. The suspects, who were wearing masks, reportedly introduced themselves as his fans and said they wanted to take a photograph with him. They also brought a bouquet.
During the interaction, one of the suspects allegedly attacked Suryavanshi with a sharp weapon, inflicting a wound approximately three to five inches long on his right hand, Kadam said.
Suryavanshi was subsequently shifted to Pune for further medical treatment. Kadam said he was out of danger at the time of the initial police briefing.
Dr Mudit Saxena, Group CEO of Ruby Hall Clinic, confirmed that Suryavanshi had been admitted to the hospital and was under observation. The medical team was monitoring his condition and conducting a detailed evaluation to determine the appropriate course of treatment.
The hospital said it would issue a formal update following the initial medical assessment, while keeping the patient’s privacy and the sensitivity of the incident in mind.
Police Search for Suspects
The Baramati Taluka police were initiating the process of registering a case, while the Local Crime Branch (LCB) team had joined the search for the suspects.
Police are investigating the identities of the attackers, their movements before the assault and whether Suryavanshi had any previous disputes that could be linked to the incident. Officers are also examining the circumstances in which the suspects approached him.
Kadam said police had spoken to eyewitnesses, who reported hearing a loud sound during the incident. However, investigators had not established whether the sound was caused by gunfire.
When asked whether the attack was connected to an earlier assault on Satpute, Kadam said no such link had been established so far. He added that the incident had occurred only about an hour to an hour and a half before the briefing, and investigators were still gathering information.
Police said further details would emerge as the investigation progressed.
