Pune: Pay 45 Paise, Get Up to Rs 10 Lakh Cover: Railway Launches Travel Insurance
Pune, 26th October 2026: Passengers booking reserved railway tickets at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters under Central Railway’s Pune Division will be able to opt for travel insurance from October 27, 2026, at a premium of just ₹0.45 per passenger. The voluntary scheme will provide coverage for death, permanent disability and specified medical expenses arising from railway accidents or defined untoward incidents, subject to policy conditions.
The insurance facility will be available only for confirmed tickets and will not apply to waiting-list tickets. Passengers can decide whether to opt for the coverage while booking their tickets at reservation counters.
Under the scheme, the maximum insurance coverage includes ₹10 lakh in the event of death, ₹10 lakh for permanent total disability and ₹7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability. Eligible hospitalisation expenses can be reimbursed up to ₹2 lakh, while transportation of mortal remains is covered up to ₹10,000, subject to the applicable policy terms and conditions.
Hemant Kumar Behera, Public Relations Officer of Central Railway’s Pune Division, said the facility would give passengers an additional option to secure insurance protection while booking their tickets.
“The scheme is voluntary, and passengers can make an informed choice based on their travel needs. For a premium of ₹0.45 per passenger, eligible travellers can opt for coverage against specified risks associated with railway accidents and defined untoward incidents. We encourage passengers to understand the benefits, exclusions and conditions of the policy before making their decision. Our staff at reservation counters will provide the necessary information to help passengers understand the facility,” Behera said.
To implement the scheme, the division is making arrangements at PRS counters, including providing the required stamps on reservation forms. Reservation supervisors and counter staff have been instructed to familiarise themselves with the scheme and guide passengers seeking information.
The insurance policy will cover only the risks and expenses specified in its terms and conditions. Passengers opting for the facility are advised to read the policy carefully before proceeding.
The issuance of the policy and settlement of claims will be the responsibility of the concerned insurance company. Passengers will have to approach the insurer directly for any claims arising under the policy.
