Pune: Pimpri Cop Dies of Heart Attack While Chasing Drug Peddler
Pimpri, 27th October 2026: A 40-year-old police head constable attached to the anti-narcotics squad of the Pimpri Chinchwad police died of a heart attack while chasing a suspect who attempted to flee during a raid on alleged MD drug peddlers in Sant Tukaram Nagar late on Sunday night.
The deceased, Javed Rafiq Bagsiraj, a resident of Morwadi in Pimpri, collapsed while pursuing the second suspect after his accomplice was apprehended near an internal housing society in Sant Tukaram Nagar. He complained of severe chest pain before collapsing.
His colleagues rushed him to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s YCM Hospital, where he suffered another cardiac arrest and died.
Police had received a tip-off that two suspects would arrive in the area to sell MD drugs. Bagsiraj informed his senior officers and laid a trap with his team. The squad managed to apprehend one suspect, while the other attempted to escape, prompting Bagsiraj to chase him.
Bagsiraj joined the Pune city police force in 2010 and initially served at the Hadapsar and Mundhwa police stations for eight years. Following the formation of the Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerate in 2018, he joined the force and served at the Pimpri police station before being posted to the crime branch. He was currently attached to the anti-narcotics squad.
His last rites were performed with state honours at a cemetery in Kasba Peth, Pune, on Monday.
He is survived by his parents, brother, wife, a 12-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son.
