Pune Police Officer Suspended for Downgrading Rs 30 Lakh Robbery to Bag Theft
Market Yard, 31st October 2026: A senior police inspector under Pune City Police has been suspended for allegedly recording a robbery involving Rs 30 lakh as a case of bag theft instead of registering it as a robbery. The action was taken by Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar following a departmental inquiry into the handling of the case.
The incident occurred on October 7, but the FIR was registered at Market Yard police station only on October 28.
According to the FIR, Shravan Devasi (22) and Ganpat Devasi (18), employees of an Angadia (cash courier) company in Market Yard, were carrying Rs 30 lakh in a bag on a scooter on October 7. At around 1.15 pm, five men travelling on two motorcycles allegedly intercepted them on Shivneri Road near Market Yard.
The accused allegedly sprayed a substance on the faces of the two employees, snatched the bag containing Rs 30 lakh and fled.
The employees subsequently informed their employer, Rakesh Pariharia, who contacted the police. Market Yard police initiated an inquiry but allegedly did not register a robbery case. Instead, on October 9, the incident was recorded as a case of bag theft.
Meanwhile, Swargate police arrested two suspects while investigating another robbery involving a businessman in the Salisbury Park area. During interrogation, the two allegedly confessed to robbing Devasi and Ganpat of Rs 30 lakh on October 7.
The alleged confession brought the discrepancy in the registration of the Market Yard case to light. Following a departmental inquiry, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar suspended Senior Police Inspector Vishwajit Jagtap for dereliction of duty.
