Pune, 3rd November 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India’s operational metro network has expanded from 248 km in 2014 to nearly 1,200 km, highlighting the country’s transformation in urban transportation over the past 12 years. He made the remarks while virtually inaugurating Pune Metro Line 3 (Pink Line) and laying the foundation stone for four new metro corridors under Phase II.
Addressing the event through video conferencing, Modi said the expansion of metro connectivity reflects the government’s commitment to improving ease of living and ease of transportation for people in urban areas.
“When the country gave the NDA the opportunity to serve in 2014, we set out with a resolve to ensure the ease of living and ease of transportation for the middle class living in cities,” he said.
The Prime Minister highlighted that metro services, which were available in only five cities in 2014, are now operational in 26 cities across the country. More than one crore people travel by metro every day, he added.
Modi inaugurated the 23-km-long Pune Metro Line 3, built at an estimated cost of over ₹8,300 crore, connecting the Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar. He said the new corridor would improve connectivity, reduce commuting time and ease traffic congestion, particularly for IT professionals travelling between Hinjewadi and other parts of Pune.
“The expansion of Pune Metro would improve connectivity, save commuting time and boost the city’s productivity,” Modi said.
He also laid the foundation stone for four new metro corridors under Pune Metro Phase II, involving an estimated investment of around ₹13,500 crore. The four corridors — Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A — will strengthen connectivity across important residential, commercial and IT hubs.
Highlighting Maharashtra’s metro infrastructure growth, Modi said the state’s operational metro network has increased from 11 km in 2014 to nearly 200 km, while work is underway on more than 680 km of metro lines. He added that investments exceeding ₹2.5 lakh crore are being made in metro infrastructure across Maharashtra.
Describing Pune as an important centre for IT, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, startups, innovation and manufacturing, the Prime Minister said stronger metro connectivity would give fresh momentum to the city’s development.
He also highlighted the significance of Pune Metro Line 3 being developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, stating that cooperation between the government and private sector could accelerate infrastructure development.
Modi further stressed that better urban infrastructure would contribute to India’s economic growth and urged local bodies and private stakeholders to work together to transform smaller cities into growth centres.
During his address, the Prime Minister also expressed concern over the difficulties faced by farmers in Maharashtra due to adverse weather conditions and assured them of support from the Centre and the NDA government. He appealed to people to ensure that affected farmers and rural families could also celebrate Deepavali.
