Pune: PMRDA Plans Parking Lots At 8 Locations Along Metro Network, Approach Municipal Corporations For Land
Pune, 4th November 2026: With commuters increasingly parking their two-wheelers and cars along roadsides and beneath Metro viaducts due to a lack of designated parking facilities at stations, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has begun planning to develop parking lots at eight locations across the Metro network.
The authority has approached the respective municipal corporations seeking land for the facilities. Work to develop parking arrangements has begun at two of the eight identified locations, while the process for the remaining sites will be taken up subsequently, PMRDA commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhary said.
The parking problem has become increasingly evident since the Pimpri Chinchwad-Swargate Metro corridor became operational. Many commuters drive to stations as public bus services connecting residential areas to Metro stations are inadequate. In the absence of organised parking facilities, they leave their vehicles along roadsides and beneath Metro viaducts, obstructing traffic and adding to congestion in station areas.
Chaudhary said the authority was also working on improving last-mile connectivity to reduce commuters’ dependence on private vehicles.
“Efforts are being made to address the parking needs of commuters and prevent inconvenience to them. We have identified eight locations where parking facilities can be considered. We will also work towards providing last-mile connectivity,” he said.
The PMRDA believes that organised parking facilities, along with better public transport connectivity to Metro stations, will encourage more people to use the Metro and help ease congestion around stations.
