Cabinet Approves Two-Year Extension for Agniveers, Opens Pathway to Regular Service
New Delhi, 4th November 2026: The Union Cabinet has approved an additional two-year engagement period for Agniveers, after which all eligible personnel will be offered enrolment as regular soldiers in the Defence Forces, subject to their willingness and fulfilment of selection criteria.
Under the revised pathway announced by the government on 4th November 2026, 25% of Agniveers will continue to be offered regular employment based on merit, as envisaged under the Agnipath Scheme. The remaining 75% will be eligible for a further two-year engagement period if they are willing to continue serving.
After completing this additional period, these Agniveers will also be offered enrolment as regular soldiers, provided they meet the prescribed selection criteria and consent to the engagement.
The decision follows an assessment of the Agnipath Scheme after four years of implementation. According to the Ministry of Defence, the assessment examined organisational requirements and operational efficiency, along with the performance of Agniveers in areas such as skills, physical fitness, motivation and technological adaptability.
The government has stated that the additional engagement period is intended to balance the career aspirations of Agniveers with the operational requirements of the Defence Forces.
The second engagement period will include higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits, according to the announcement.
The Cabinet’s decision also means that the Agnipath Scheme will continue, with the additional engagement period forming part of the pathway towards regular service.
Among the outcomes highlighted in the government’s four-year assessment are recruitment across more districts, a more standardised recruitment process, and increased opportunities for women in various branches of the Defence Forces. The assessment also cited physical fitness, discipline, skill development and technological adaptability among Agniveers.
The revised arrangement provides an additional route for Agniveers who are not selected for regular employment after their initial engagement to remain in service before being considered for regular enrolment.
