India And UK Strengthen Ties With Focus On Free Trade Agreement
London, 6th March 2025: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is currently on a six-day official visit to the United Kingdom, focusing on advancing India-UK relations through discussions on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA), countering extremism, and enhancing diplomatic ties.
Starting on 4th March, the visit has seen significant engagements with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Foreign Secretary David Lammy, and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.
During his meeting with PM Starmer at 10 Downing Street, Jaishankar conveyed greetings from PM Narendra Modi and discussed bilateral cooperation and global issues like the Ukraine conflict. Talks with UK ministers emphasized talent mobility, trade relations, and tackling extremism.
The FTA negotiations have been a central topic, aiming to eliminate tariffs on Indian goods and improve market access for students and workers. Jaishankar highlighted progress but acknowledged the complexity of finalizing the deal. The agreement is expected to boost the £41-billion annual trade partnership significantly.
Addressing extremism concerns, Jaishankar met UK officials to discuss pro-Khalistan activities and ensured safety measures for Indian diplomats following recent attacks on the High Commission. He stressed India’s expectations for firm action against violence and extremism.
Jaishankar also defended India’s purchase of Russian oil during a public interaction in London, stating it helped stabilize global inflation. He dismissed accusations of India’s illiberalism, asserting that India remains committed to its values while addressing global challenges.
The visit underscores the deepening of India-UK ties under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and Roadmap 2030, with cooperation spanning trade, security, education, and cultural exchanges.
