Pune: Fursungi and Uruli Devachi to Form New Municipal Council
Pune, 12th September 2024: The areas of Fursungi and Uruli Devachi will soon have their own municipal council, following years of persistent demands for demerger. On Wednesday, 11th September, the Maharashtra state government issued an official notification confirming that these regions are no longer part of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and that a joint Fursungi-Uruli Devachi Municipal Council has been established.
In 2017, 11 villages, including Fursungi and Uruli Devachi, were brought under PMC’s jurisdiction. Prior to finalizing the demerger, the state government had sought public feedback.
Purandar Tehsildar Vikram Rajput has reportedly been appointed as the administrator of the newly formed municipal council until it is officially constituted. However, PMC will retain control over the waste depot located in these villages.
Former Purandar MLA and Shiv Sena leader Vijay Shivtare was a key advocate for the demerger, arguing that the inclusion of Fursungi and Uruli Devachi in PMC had not benefited local residents.
The proposal highlighted that citizens were burdened by PMC’s high property taxes while the areas received insufficient funding for development and infrastructure. Despite being part of PMC for the past seven years, locals expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of progress.
