Kolkata, 16th November 2023: In a spectacle of skill and determination, Australia emerged victorious in a riveting semi-final clash against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, during the 2nd Semi-Final of ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023. The encounter, marked by rain interruptions and a fluctuating momentum, witnessed Australia securing a 3-wicket win over South Africa with 16 balls remaining, marking their place in the highly anticipated final against India at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
South Africa, winning the toss, opted to bat first in a decision that would later be subjected to scrutiny as the conditions at Eden Gardens proved challenging for their batsmen.
South Africa’s batting woes began early in the powerplay, losing the crucial wickets of captain Temba Bavuma and opener Quinton de Kock. The Australian bowling attack, spearheaded by Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, exploited the swinging conditions effectively. Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen’s dismissals further hindered South Africa’s progress, leaving them at a precarious 18 runs for the loss of two wickets after the initial 10 overs.
Just as David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen were looking to stabilize the innings, rain played a spoiler, disrupting the match with both batsmen at 10 runs each. After a one-hour break, the match resumed, and David Miller showcased his resilience, crafting a brilliant century with 101 runs in 116 balls. The South African batting effort reached its end at 212 runs by the 50th over. Mitchell Starc’s three-wicket display, coupled with impactful performances from Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Travis Head, showcased Australia’s bowling prowess during this crucial phase of the match.
Chasing a target of 213 runs, Australia’s openers, Travis Head and David Warner, provided an explosive start, reaching the 50-run mark with a run rate of around 9.00. However, South Africa made a commendable comeback with wickets of Warner and Mitchell Marsh, courtesy of strategic bowling changes.
Travis Head continued his aggressive approach, scoring a rapid half-century in 40 balls. Despite facing some setbacks with missed chances, Head was eventually bowled out by Keshav Maharaj after scoring 62 runs in 48 balls. Spinners, particularly Tabraiz Shamsi, exploited the pitch conditions post the rain delay, causing trouble for the Australian middle order.
Steve Smith and Josh Inglis steadied the ship for Australia, navigating through the spin challenge. However, a skied shot from Smith, caught by Quinton de Kock, brought a twist to the tale. Gerald Coetzee, who earlier conceded runs, made a remarkable comeback, bowling out Inglis when he was on 28 in 49 balls.
With wickets falling, Australia faced some tense moments, but captain Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc showcased their all-round capabilities, steering Australia to victory. Cummins remained unbeaten at 23 runs, and Starc’s valuable contributions guided Australia to the win in the 48th over with 16 balls remaining.
Gerald Coetzee and Tabraiz Shamsi took 2 wickets each for South Africa, while Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, and Keshav Maharaj contributed 1 wicket each.
With this thrilling victory, Australia secured a spot in the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 final against India. The clash, set to take place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, presents a high-stakes encounter as both teams vie for cricketing glory. India, having defeated New Zealand in the semi-final, is eager to claim their third World Cup trophy, while Australia aims for a historic sixth title. Cricket enthusiasts worldwide eagerly await the culmination of this intense tournament, promising a grand finale that will be etched in cricketing history.
