Workshop on Intellectual Disability at Umed Pariwar

Pune, October 13: An interesting and thought provoking workshop on Intellectual disability held at Arvind Saurabh, Wadki, a new group home of Umed Pariwar. Nitin K Patil, Chief Commissioner of Disabilities was the Chief Guest and was present at the Workshop.

More than 40 parent leaders representing 10 districts of Maharashtra participated in this workshop. The workshop was based on the four topics including Early Intervention by Dr Vandana Giri of AWMH, Self-Advocacy & Special Education Burde of PARIVAAR Sahyadri, Skill Building by A N Bijur of PARIVAAR NCPO and Group Homes for Mentally Challenged persons (Residential facility) by Rajendra Nahar of Umed Pariwar. There were extensive discussion on these subjects.

During the visit, the Commissioner introduced interesting elements of Naturopathy and intervention in the subjects. He also dwelled on issues raised by Parents regarding registration, utilization of 3% budget for Persons with Disability (PwD) by local government bodies, support for marketing goods produced in supported workshop and scholarship/ pension for PwD. He expressed his appreciation for this initiative by Parivaar Sahyadri and Umed Pariwar and mentioned that Parents’ organizations have very important role to play in PwD affairs and must be included in policy forming bodies and government policy.

The workshop ended with a walk around of new group home facility.
