1 TMC water to be released from Khadakwasla dam for Daund, Indapur

Pune, May 4, 2016 – Even after opposition from various political parties, the Pune district administration on Wednesday released 600 cusecs water from Khadakwasla dam for Daund and Indapur talukas which are facing sever water shortage. A total of 1 TMC water will be released in the coming days.

Pune district collector Saurabh Rao told Punekar News that elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure that water is not wasted on the way and reaches its destination.

“We have deployed several teams of police, flying squads, and technical staff as well officials from the revenue department. They will keep watch so that nobody lifts water from the canal. There are seven teams and each has been given jurisdiction of 30 km,” Rao said.

He clarified that there is sufficient water in the dam for Pune city.

“Pune municipal commissioner had asked for water storage for the city till July 31 while we have assured it till July 15. There will be 1.20 TMC water in the dam till July 15. The dam has capacity to store 1 TMC water which is called dead stock but that can also be used if required. There will be no further water cuts in Pune city,” Rao added.

Meanwhile political parties like MNS, Shiv Sena and a section of NCP opposed the  release of water from the dam.
