Pune, 12th October 2026: Pune residents may face a 10% water cut from October 15, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) expected to decide on the proposal after a meeting with irrigation officials on Monday or Tuesday.

The state government’s directive to plan a 10% reduction in water use was received by the civic body on Friday. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram is expected to discuss water availability and allocation for drinking and irrigation with officials from the irrigation department. A final decision will be taken after consultations with the mayor and political party leaders.

The directive comes amid concerns over deficient rainfall and uncertainty over the next monsoon. The water resources department has asked local bodies, including the PMC and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), as well as industrial areas, to regulate consumption to ensure that available stocks last until the next monsoon.

The Khadakwasla dam system currently holds 26.16 TMC of water, or 89.76% of its storage capacity. The irrigation department is seeking to conserve the stock to meet demand until August 2027.

If the PMC decides to implement the 10% cut, one option under consideration is to suspend water supply for a day every week, which could result in savings of around 14%.

The irrigation department has also asked civic bodies to plug leakages in distribution networks, curb unauthorised water connections and increase the use of treated wastewater for non-drinking purposes. Treated water can be used for gardens, road dividers, construction activities and industrial processes, reducing the demand for potable water.
