15-Year-Old Girl Married Off in Pune’s Balewadi, Groom and 35 Relatives Booked
Balewadi, 11th May 2026: A shocking case of child marriage has come to light in Pune’s Balewadi area, where a minor girl was allegedly married off despite relatives and the groom being aware that she was underage. Baner Police have registered a case against 35 persons, including the groom and family members from both sides.
According to police officials, the marriage ceremony took place around 1 pm on Sunday (May 10) in the Balewadi area. The girl involved in the case is reportedly around 15 years old.
Police said the groom, aged 22, and the relatives were fully aware that the girl was a minor. Despite this, the marriage was conducted in violation of the law. The relatives also allegedly failed to inform the police authorities about the child marriage.
After receiving information about the incident, Senior Police Inspector Chandrashekhar Sawant and other police officers visited the spot and verified the details.
Based on a complaint filed by police constable Abhijit Ghatole, Baner Police registered an offence against the groom, his parents, and relatives of the girl, along with others involved in organising the marriage ceremony.
The case has been registered under Sections 9, 10 and 11 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. Police have issued notices to the accused persons, and further investigation is underway.
Speaking about the case, Senior Police Inspector Chandrashekhar Sawant said the girl’s family belongs to a rural area and works as labourers. He added that police acted immediately after receiving information about the child marriage and subsequently registered a criminal case against those involved.
