16 Accident-Prone Spots in Pune Division Cleared of Traffic Congestion, Claims NHAI
Pune, 4th August 2025: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that preventive measures taken on national highways across Pune Division have cleared traffic congestion at 16 accident-prone locations. The NHAI, in coordination with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), identified 22 such spots, of which issues at 16 have now been resolved.
Three major national highways pass through the Pune region, the Pune-Satara Highway (NH 48), Pune-Solapur Highway (NH 965/Palkhi Marg), and Pune-Nashik Highway (Khed Division), all of which have seen frequent accidents. To improve safety and control speed, authorities have implemented measures such as installing CCTV cameras, enforcing speed limits, laying rumble strips, putting up signboards, and creating alternate service roads.
NHAI Project Director Sanjay Kadam stated, “Preventive steps are underway at several accident sites across highways in the Pune Division, and six major spots have been addressed. These locations were notorious for frequent accidents and persistent traffic congestion. In coordination with Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations, the Pune District Collector’s Office, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), and other local bodies, immediate actions are ensuring smoother travel for citizens at these sites.”
On the Pune-Satara Highway, specific improvements have been made at Navale Bridge, Warje Chowk, Wadgaon Bridge, Katraj Tunnel, Khed Shivapur Toll Plaza, Bhor Phata, the stretch from New to Old Katraj Tunnel, and the entrance of Katraj Ghat, among others. On the Pune-Solapur Highway, works were carried out at Saswad Phata, Jejuri, Velhe, Lonand, and additional locations, with encroachments cleared as part of the process. Likewise, on the Pune-Nashik Highway, the NHAI has addressed congestion at Nashik Phata, Moshi Chowk, Alandi Phata, Markal Phata, Chimbali Phata, Chakan MIDC, Kuruli Phata, Rajgurunagar Bypass Chowk, and several other areas.
According to the NHAI, these interventions aim to reduce accidents and ensure safer and faster commutes for motorists across the Pune Division.
