Pune, January 30 – Presence of mind  shown by a railway policeman helped save a 5 year old girl from being pushed into begging.

Police constable Ramesh Pansare was on duty in Lucknow Express when he saw the minor girl crying in general coach. He got suspicious and asked Sumit Murli Manohar Khanna (23) who was holding the girl, about her. Initially he gave vague answers and later reportedly accepted that he had kidnapped the girl and  was taking her away to make her beg.

Constable Pansare brought the man and girl to railway police station and informed her parents. Her father works with Military Hospital’s Cardio Thoracic Centre (MH CTC) on Kondhwa road near Salisbury Park and he registered a case against Khanna with Wanowrie police station.

Khanna had kidnapped the girl from near her house at hospital’s servant quarters around 3 pm on Friday.

Police Sub Inspector B K Muthe, who is investigating the case, said, “Khanna worked as watchman in Kothrud. We have obtained CCTV footage which show that he reached the spot on cycle. He lured the girl by promising to buy chocolate and kidnapped her.”

Khanna will be produced before a magistrate court on Saturday afternoon.
