Pune, 6th February 2024: The Chatushrungi police took action against 50 members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) late on Sunday, registering a case for organizing a morcha without police permission. The morcha took place from Chatushrungi temple to the main gate of Savitribai Phule Pune University on Sunday.

Earlier that day, ABVP members submitted a letter to the university officials, urging strong action against students and a professor involved in alleged “objectionable dialogues” during an experimental play. They also demanded repercussions for students who reportedly assaulted ABVP members during a protest on Friday evening at the university’s Lalit Kala Kendra amphitheater.

In response, the university formed a seven-member fact-finding committee, led by a retired district judge, to investigate the matter. The committee is expected to file a case related to the events on Friday based on its report.

Senior Inspector Balaji Pandhare of Chatushrungi police explained, “We registered the case under the provision of section 135 of CrPC as they did not follow our directions of refraining from taking out the morcha. We did not permit them.”
