Pune: 5% GST On Food Grains, Essential Commodities; Merchants To Protest

Pune, 8th July 2022: The Central Government has decided to levy five percent of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) on food grains and other essential commodities. Merchants and traders across the state have become aggressive and will protest against the decision.

On Tuesday 12th July, against the proposed tax, every district and taluka level trader’s organization will submit a letter to the officials at the GST office.

A statewide commercial conference was held today at the Vyapar Bhawan of the Poona Merchants Chamber in the Market Yard to oppose the decision. Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce Chairman Lalit Gandhi, President of the Confederation of All India Traders, Dilip Kumbhajkar, Chairman of the Poona Merchants Chamber, Rajendra Bathia, Federation of Association of Maharashtra (FAM) President Walchand Sancheti, Chairman Mohan Gurnani, Senior Vice-President Rajesh Shah, President of GRIMA Sharadbhai Maru, Vice-President of Rashtriya Grahak Panchayat Suryakant Pathak, Kirti Rana (Mumbai), Sharad Shah (Sangli), Sachin Nivangune (Pune), Amol Shah (Baramati), Prabhakar Shah (Pimpri-Chinchwad), Praful Sancheti (Nashik), Rajendra Chopda (Solapur), Raju Rathi (Kolhapur), Abhay Kumar and others were present for the conference.

According to the traders, the traditional method of trade is in trouble due to online trade. In such a situation, the government needs to help us. The GST Council has recently decided to levy GST on food, and they have raised the question, “Has this decision been taken to help multinational companies?.”
