Kalyani Nagar, 4th April 2023: Residents of Kalyani Nagar have written a letter to the Pune Municipal Commissioner requesting to halt granting permission to commercial establishments, including nightclubs and open-air lounges in the inner lanes and bylanes of the area. The residents, under the banner of Team Swachh Kalyani Nagar, have stated that the presence of nightclubs and pubs in the area is causing inconvenience and disruption to their daily lives.

In the letter, the residents have cited various reasons for their objection to commercial establishments in the area. They claim that some nightclubs play amplified music beyond the permissible levels and well beyond 10 pm, causing health hazards like stress, anxiety, headache/migraine, depression, etc. to residents, including senior citizens, patients, and children. The letter also mentions that some nightclubs operate beyond the official deadline of operation of 1:30 am, and several restaurants and pubs operate without parking spaces, leading to haphazard parking in the area.

The residents also raised concerns about women’s safety, as customers leaving from the pubs are inebriated and have consumed alcohol, resulting in anti-social elements gathering in the area. They also state that people leave the nightclubs in large groups, causing a rush and continuous honking on the road, disturbing the sleep of residents.

Moreover, several schools and kindergartens have mushroomed in the area, causing huge bottlenecks for traffic. The residents have also complained that several commercial establishments have openly encroached on the open spaces especially reserved for parking, further creating a bottleneck.

The letter concludes with a request to halt granting licenses to any commercial establishments, inclusive of nightclubs and open-air lounges, until a full, transparent, and thorough review/audit is conducted on the critical matter of accessibility of emergency services.

The residents have sought cooperation from all concerned departments involved in granting licenses to commercial establishments and urged them not to issue the same any further. They have also highlighted that they have complained to the Pune Police and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take strict action against the restaurants, but no permanent solution was provided.

The residents have appealed to the authorities to take strict action against commercial establishments that violate rules and cause inconvenience to residents. They have also requested the authorities to take into account the concerns raised in the letter and conduct a thorough review/audit of the matter.

The authorities are yet to respond to the letter.
