Pune: Airfare Surge for Maha Kumbh Sparks Outrage and Protest Threats
Pune, 29th January 2025: The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has led to a dramatic surge in airfare prices, prompting widespread criticism and calls for government intervention. With millions of devotees travelling to attend the world’s largest religious gathering, airlines have significantly increased ticket prices, with some fares exceeding international travel costs.
The All India Consumer Panchayat (ABGP) has demanded immediate action from the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to regulate airfares. The organization has warned of nationwide protests at airports if ticket prices are not controlled within three days. “Airlines are exploiting the situation by charging exorbitant fares, with some tickets costing as much as ₹60,000 for a one-way journey,” said Shrikant Joshi, head of the Panchayat.
Reports reveal that airfare for routes such as Mumbai to Prayagraj has soared from the usual Rs 5,000–Rs 8,000 to Rs 32,000–Rs 40,000. In certain cases, prices have reached Rs 70,996 for a one-way ticket from Chennai to Prayagraj—higher than flights to international destinations like London or Bali. This surge is attributed to dynamic pricing driven by overwhelming demand during key bathing dates such as Mauni Amavasya on 29th January and Basant Panchami on 3rd February.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has stepped in to address the issue by urging airlines to rationalize fares and increase flight capacity. As of 23rd January, 81 additional flights have been approved for Prayagraj, raising the total number of flights to 132 across India. However, concerns about unethical pricing persist despite these measures.
Political leaders have also voiced their discontent. AAP MP Raghav Chadha criticized airlines for exploiting devotees’ faith and urged the government to cap airfares. “This is a disservice to pilgrims,” he stated.
The All India Consumer Panchayat has emphasized the need for affordable travel options and direct flight services from major cities to Prayagraj. In a memorandum submitted to Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and other officials, they demanded immediate fare regulation. Failure to act will result in protests at airports and airline offices nationwide.
This year’s Maha Kumbh is particularly significant as it occurs after 144 years. Over 10 crore devotees have already visited Prayagraj since the festival began on 13th January. With attendance expected to reach 45 crore by 26th February, logistical challenges like airfare hikes threaten accessibility for many pilgrims.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the government and airlines to ensure fair pricing while accommodating the massive influx of travellers.
