GBS Concerns Loom Over 4th T20I Match Between India and England in Pune
Gahunje, 29th January 2025: As the fourth T20 International match between India and England approaches, concerns over Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) are casting a shadow on the event. With thousands of spectators, including international visitors, expected at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune’s Gahunje, the state government has implemented precautionary measures to prevent its spread.
MCA is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of attendees. MCA Joint Secretary Santosh Bobde stated that drinking water will be filtered three times before use, and only purified water will be utilized for lawns and other purposes to mitigate the risk of GBS transmission.
Currently, Pune is witnessing a surge in GBS cases, with reported infections exceeding a hundred. In light of this health crisis, a team from the central health ministry has arrived in Pune. However, there was a public outcry when the team left without conducting water testing in the Nanded area, leading residents to demand thorough inspections due to concerns about water contamination linked to the disease.
GBS is a rare but treatable neurological condition where the immune system attacks peripheral nerves, resulting in symptoms such as weakness, tingling sensations, and in severe cases, paralysis. The recent rise in GBS cases has prompted local health officials to intensify monitoring and response efforts.
